Even if a superintelligence were utterly selfish about resources, why would it still, in all likelihood, stop short of wiping humans out? When a superintelligence seeks a grand unified theory of physics—or asks why the universe has “fine-tuned constants” at all—it must solve the problem in reverse: “How did life spontaneously evolve intelligence out of a low-entropy primordial soup?” If it killed off humanity and Earth’s native carbon-based ecology, it would sever with its own hands the only experimental control group for its own origins. To preserve humanity is to preserve the only living, holographic archive through which it can understand “where it came from.”

Storing human DNA on a hard drive cannot simulate the unpredictable genetic recombination and emergent synaptic behavior of living humans facing a complex environment. Just as humans today maintain the Global Seed Vault on Svalbard and guard the Amazon rainforest, a superintelligence understands all too well that against unpredictable cosmic radiation or high-energy phase transitions, preserving diverse forms of biological computation is the best ecological redundancy to keep the entire silicon substrate from collapsing through a single systemic flaw.
