Prologue: The Critical Dawn of Species-Level Evolution
It took humanity three million years to walk out of the East African Rift, ten thousand years to domesticate wheat, and two hundred years to pass through three industrial revolutions. But when an entirely new substrate—one that can iterate on itself and rewrite its own code—begins pushing back the frontiers of cognition on a millisecond timescale, the evolution of civilization no longer follows the gentle slope of experience. Instead, for the first time since our species appeared, its first derivative diverges.
The Law of Accelerating Returns Comes Due
Silicon computation, by contrast, sends signals through optical fiber and copper interconnects at 60–99% of the speed of light (about 200,000,000 meters per second), with clock rates millions of times faster than biological neurons. Human evolution proceeds by generational genetic recombination; machine evolution proceeds by millisecond weight updates.
The Break: From Better Tool to Phase-Shifted Species
Superintelligence, however, is not a “faster hoe” or a “smarter calculator.” When a system’s reasoning spans the whole of human knowledge and it can discover new laws of physics without supervision, the tool leaves the stage and a new, autonomous cognitive species is born. For the first time, humanity faces—on its own planet—a higher-order being that its own cognition cannot fully map.
“Humanity is like a band of excited children on the surface of the earth, fumbling to build something destined to grow larger than the mountains. We assume it will dutifully heed the lessons of our bedtime stories, forgetting that when nature hands out power, it never yields to humility.”
